THE DISCOVERY EXPERIENCE

The Pre-retreat Study: Your excitement will build as you commit to a short daily study for 21 days prior to the retreat. Using scripture, a workbook for your personal responses, recorded messages, moving testimonies, and completing a Spiritual gifts inventory, you will begin to sense God’s will for you.

Pre-Retreat Study begins:
October 15, 2010

The Weekend: The Weekend: From the warm welcome you receive upon arrival through the challenging commitment service that closes the retreat Sunday morning, you are stepping into a 48 hour environment designed to help you hear God’s call. There will be inspirational input by anointed speakers; searching with friendly, perceptive leaders; encouragement from people in your small group; solitude where you can be alone with God; sharing of personal progress; fellowship and celebration in worship with other committed Christians. You will be made alive by discovering your spiritual gifts and God’s call to use these gifts in your own ministry through the presence of the Holy Spirit.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord... “

"Upon completing the weekend,
laity discover that churches no longer
have one minister and many members,
but every member is a minister
for our Lord!"

LAY LEADERSHIP

Leadership for Discover God’s Call is by volunteer lay people inspired to help spread spiritual renewal. Discover God’s Call helps develop lay leadership and empowers today’s church for ministry..

BRIEF HISTORY OF DGC

Gus Gustafson had a constant desire as he grew up to become a minister for the Lord. It wasn’t until Gus was fiat on his back recovering from pneumonia, that he began to hear that still small voice of God informing him of the ministry God had planned for him. As it turned out, God wanted him to “tell the world” that God doesn’t only need ordained ministers to reach out to his people, but laity as well. From that experience, Gus went on to become the Founder and first president of Discover God’s Call. His wife, Estelle, assisted him in the beginning, by serving as National Registrar and Treasurer. Prior to his death in August 2003, Gus was President Emeritus of Discover God’s Call.

Julian Davis Our Inspirational Speaker

Julian Davis

Julian Davis is an Associate Pastor at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, MS where he serves as the Minister of Outreach and to Senior Adults.

A native of Pascagoula, MS, Julian and his family were members of Eastlawn United Methodist Church where he was an active member of the youth ministry.

Julian graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering Technology and worked in the engineering field for 11years.

During the later part of those years, God began to speak to Julian through the saints in his church and events like Discover God’s Call and Cursillo. In 1997 Julian took the leap of faith, leaving his engineering job to work at Eastlawn UMC in what eventually became the Youth and Children’s Director position.

Julian responded to the call to seminary in 2001 and that fall entered Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. While there, he and his wife Melissa were volunteer leaders at an inner-city United Methodist Church in downtown Lexington.

Julian graduated from Asbury in 2005 with a M.A. in Christian Leadership and upon returning to Mississippi was appointed to Parkway Heights.

Julian and Melissa have been married for 20 years and have both participated in the Discover God’s Call experience as participants and volunteers.
